Gary Whitman serves as the third clarinet/bass clarinet with the Fort Worth Symphony, appointed in 1993. As an orchestral musician he has worked with such conductors as Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano, Rossen Milanov, and Enrique Diemecke. Active as a recitalist and educator, he has presented performances and masterclasses throughout the United States, Peru, Belgium, Italy, Puerto Rico, Cuba and China. In 2020, he retired from the faculty at Texas Christian University after a 31-year tenure as Professor of Clarinet and Division Chair of Woodwinds. He has recorded on the Albany and Parma record labels with Trio Con Brio, a TCU faculty trio of clarinet, viola and piano, and the Harmonia Mundi label with the Fort Worth Symphony. In 2009 TCU awarded him the Chancellor’s Distinguished Achievement as a Creative Teacher and Scholar. Past-President of the International Clarinet Association, Mr. Whitman is an artist-clinician for Buffet Crampon, Inc. and D’Addario Woodwinds. When he is not performing with the Fort Worth Symphony at Bass Hall, Mr. Whitman enjoys traveling with his wife, Cindy Lansford, retired band clinician and consultant.
